Air India Express Boeing 737 max

Air India Express, the Tata Group’s low-cost subsidiary, has officially become a member of the International Air Transport Association (IATA), marking a major milestone in its global journey.

The membership brings the carrier in line with international safety, operational, and settlement standards, boosting its credibility and making it easier to establish codeshare and interline partnerships with other global airlines.

Analysts suggest that Air India Express could soon explore codeshares with carriers such as Emirates, Qatar Airways, Etihad, Singapore Airlines, Lufthansa Group, and Turkish Airlines, leveraging its strong network across Gulf and Southeast Asia.

For passengers, this move means better connectivity, smoother ticketing, and expanded travel options as the airline integrates more closely into the global aviation ecosystem. With Air India already pursuing more than 10 new codeshare agreements worldwide, Air India Express’s IATA entry is seen as a key step in aligning the low-cost airline with Tata Group’s broader aviation strategy.

Other Indian Airlines in IATA

Air India Express now joins a select group of Indian carriers that are part of IATA. Here’s a look at who else is in the club and what they gained:

Air India – 1947 – Among IATA’s earliest members; gained global recognition, easier interline agreements, and credibility to codeshare with Star Alliance partners like Lufthansa, United, and Singapore Airlines.
IndiGo – 2015 – Access to IATA’s BSP settlement system, stronger global credibility, and easier codeshares/interlines (later with Turkish Airlines, Qatar Airways).
SpiceJet – 2015 – Joined for global ticket distribution and interline potential via BSP, though financial challenges limited broader benefits.
Air India Express – 2025 – Boosts global credibility; opens doors to codeshares with carriers such as Emirates, Singapore Airlines, Lufthansa Group; supports Tata Group’s international aviation ambitions.

Why It Matters

  • Global Credibility: Membership signals compliance with international safety and operational standards.

  • Passenger Benefits: Seamless ticketing, baggage handling, and more global travel options.

  • Stronger Partnerships: Easier to strike codeshare and interline agreements.

  • Industry Voice: Ability to shape aviation policy, sustainability, and innovation at the global level.
